Joshua Schmiedicke Tragedy Print

On Saturday, July 8, 2006, a tragic accident occurred resulting in the death of my nephew who was almost 5-years old, Joshua Schmiedicke. His mother was parked in their Surburban in the church parking lot, and the older children had gone into the church to look for their dad who had come in his own car to go to confession. Unbeknownst to Regina, Joshua had climbed out of the car and crawled under the car right in front of the rear wheel. She moved the car slightly to make room for another car to park, and a man screamed. She jumped out, saw Joshua and knew the worst. She held his hand and spoke to soothe him, and she saw him draw his last breath. Andrew and Regina’s faith is strong, and in their great sorrow, have given over their Joshua to his Heavenly Father. Please pray for them and their other 5 children, Caleb,11, Rose,9, Marygrace, 7, Thomas, almost 3, and Joan, 8 months.

I wanted to write a quick note of gratitude for all of the calls, notes, and words of support and encouragement. Thank you, most especially, for the prayers. It is clearly evident that it is the graces that are a direct result of those prayers that have carried us in these horrible last few days. This tragic loss has altered our lives indefinitely, and the effects will be with us forever. As deep as our sadness is, it does not compare to the grief of my sister, Regina, her husband, Andrew, and the rest of their children are dealing with. Yet, there is a sense of amazement, as we have watched their strength, their deep sense of faith in action. I have pondered on this witness over these last few days, and just marveled at the graces that have been poured over our family. Praise God for His infinite Wisdom and Mercy!

The wake was a true testament of the effect the Schmiedicke/Doman family has had on so many people. It was a beautiful service attended by hundreds of people. The Church was packed. People spilled over into the side aisles and the back of the Church. There were many families in attendance, with many children present…another testimony to the beauty of openness to life! Father Benedict Groeshel, C.F.R. was in attendance, and gave a beautiful speech. Mike Schmiedicke, Andrew’s brother, gave one half of the eulogy…a beautiful poem written in Joshua’s honor. Then, Regina gave her eulogy. It was beautiful. And, her strength was transforming for me. I can not get over her witness of faith and strength. I have attached a copy of her eulogyfor Joshua so you can share in the testimony of his life.

Joshua’s Eulogy

Many people have asked how they can help. One thing that we are trying to do is give the family financial support. Feel free to send any checks to:
